The Architect of Sekotong: Dwayne Hill’s Bold Vision for West Lombok

There is a specific, breathless moment that occurs at Sundancer Residences & Villas Lombok.

It happens the second you step through the grand entrance into the lobby. Before you have even reached the concierge, the horizon opens up, and you are met with an unexpected masterpiece: the signature lagoon-style swimming pool.

It is a vast, azure expanse that mirrors the West Lombok sky, framed by swaying palms and the distant, shimmering Lombok Strait. It is not just a pool; it is a statement of intent—a promise that here, the world slows down.

We sat down with the visionary behind this high-end sanctuary, Mr. Dwayne Hill, to discuss his strategy for Sekotong and the deeply personal values that drive the Sundancer brand.

The Heartbeat of Sekotong

For Dwayne, Sundancer’s role extends far beyond providing luxury accommodation. He views the property as the vital center of the region’s ecosystem.

"Sundancer is the heartbeat of Sekotong," he says with conviction. "As the premier high-end anchor of West Lombok, we are the pulse from which the area's tourism and community development radiate. We don't just occupy this space; we sustain it. Our presence ensures a standard of excellence that elevates the entire destination."

A Vision Rooted in "The Secret Coast"

When asked why he chose Sekotong, a region far removed from the bustling crowds of Senggigi or Kuta, Dwayne’s answer is rooted in the long-term potential of West Lombok.

Sekotong is Indonesia’s best-kept secret," Dwayne remarks, looking out toward the 'Secret Gilis' visible from the property. "Our strategy has never been about following the masses. It’s about pioneering. We saw an opportunity to create a 'Market Anchor' - a high-end destination that offers the privacy and space that modern travelers are now prioritizing above all else.

His strategy for the future of Sundancer isn't just about room nights; it's about destination-making. Under his leadership, the resort has transformed into a launchpad for the region, bridging the gap between world-class comfort and the rugged, untouched beauty of the West.

The Wallace Line: A Mediterranean Microclimate in the Tropics

Perhaps the most compelling aspect of Mr. Hill’s strategy is his focus on Sekotong’s unique climate - a geographical "glitch" that sets the property apart from the rest of the Indonesian archipelago. While much of the region experiences typical tropical humidity, Sekotong enjoys a distinct, arid microclimate, particularly from June through September.

"We offer a summer weather profile that is virtually unique to this corner of the world," Dwayne explains. "During these months, we are dry as a bone. The humidity vanishes, leaving behind a crisp, arid air that feels more like Southern Spain than Southeast Asia."

This phenomenon is likely tied to the property’s location along the Wallace Line - the deep-water channel and faunal boundary that separates the ecozones of Asia and Australia. While rain may be pouring across the bay in typical tropical fashion, Sundancer remains under clear, dry skies.

"The hillsides turn a golden brown, reminiscent of the Mediterranean," Dwayne notes. "In the evenings, the temperature drops just enough that guests might reach for a light jacket. It is a rare environment where you can often bypass the air conditioning and simply breathe the fresh, dry air of the strait."

Family Values: The Heart of the House

While many 5-star properties focus on cold, clinical luxury, Dwayne has steered Sundancer in a different direction. He emphasizes Family Values as the core DNA of the property.

At its heart, Sundancer Lombok is a home," he explains. "When we designed our residences - some of the largest in Lombok - we did so with the family unit in mind. We wanted spaces where parents could relax in their own suite while children have the freedom to explore safely. But beyond architecture, 'Family Values' is how we treat our guests and our staff. We are a community. When you arrive at Sundancer, you aren't a booking number; you are a guest in our family estate.

This philosophy is evident in the warmth of the service, where local staff from nearby villages bring a genuine, heartfelt hospitality that can’t be taught in a manual.

The Hillside Evolution: Redefining the High-End Stay

The most recent evolution in Dwayne’s strategy is the unveiling of the Hillside Sea View Pool Villas. Perched 60 meters above sea level, these villas represent the pinnacle of his vision for the property.

The future of high-end travel is about 'The Bubble'," Dwayne says. "Our hillside villas offer complete seclusion. You have your own infinity pool, your own kitchen, and a view that is quite literally breathtaking. It’s about giving guests the choice: complete immersion in the resort’s social lagoon pool, or total isolation in their private sanctuary.

A Legacy for West Lombok

As our conversation concludes, it’s clear that Dwayne Hill isn't just building a hotel; he is building a legacy for Sekotong.

My goal for the next five years is to ensure that when people think of Lombok, they think of the serenity of the West," he says. "We will continue to innovate, to integrate smarter technology for our guests, and to protect the natural beauty that surrounds us. But we will always do it with the same family-first heart that we started with.

As you leave the lobby, passing that magnificent pool once more, you realize that Dwayne Hill hasn't just built a resort. He has built a sanctuary where the high-end lifestyle finally meets the warmth of home.
