ELEVATOR ENTRAPMENT PROCEDURE

Purpose: 

This ensures guests are trapped inside the elevator handled with the right way.

PROCEDURE

• Annually: Property must perform the following task(s): 

  • Schedule, complete and document training  on elevator entrapment procedures for associates that may be involved with helping in the case of elevator entrapment. 

• Elevator entrapment procedure to follow for the property Engineer or Loss Prevention associate: 

  • The occupants are not to be evacuated by property associates, (unless required by local regulations and are trained by the elevator service provider), but only by trained elevator service personnel or by official emergency response personnel; firemen, policemen, etc. 

  • Inform the manager on duty, loss prevention and an Engineering leader and immediately call the elevator service company. 

  • The engineer on duty or the loss prevention associate on duty is to locate the stalled elevator car and inform the occupants that they are safe and that steps are being taken to evacuate them safely from the elevator. Check position of car and status of doors. 

  • Determine if there is an emergency need. 

  • If an emergency exists, call Emergency Services and inform the occupants that emergency response is on the way. 

  • Determine the number of occupants in the elevator car. 

  • The occupants should be continually informed of the evacuation status and reassured of their safety. 

  • Identify yourself and communicate with occupants. Inform them that they are safe and steps are being taken to evacuate them safely. Also ask them to keep calm, stay away and not attempt to open the door, and do not touch any buttons unless asked to do so. Advise them that they will notice movements such as the car moving slowly in an up or down direction, etc. The occupants should be continually informed of the evacuation status and reassured of their safety. 

  • An official incident report should be fully completed after any entrapment and should include the contact information for all guests and associates that were entrapped.
