DRY CLEANING PROCEDURE

Guest Expectation : I expect dry cleaning to be professionally managed. Dry Cleaning is a service which is offered by upscale hotels and I expect staffs who work in these areas to be competent in dry cleaning.

TRAINING QUESTIONS

Sorting

  • Select wool, silk, rayon, linen, viscose made garments for dry-cleaning.


Cotton, polyester, nylon, carillon made    garments are usually for washing.


Garment sorting is also based on style design:  

Suit (jacket and trousers or skirt, dress), Coat, Pullover, Silk shirt blouse, Ties and   Scarves are usually for dry-cleaning.


Undershirts, underpants, jeans, handkerchief, shirts and blouse are normally for washing.

  2. Ensure the right date is written on the Laundry sheet.

  3. Which materials should be dry cleaned and which should be washed?

Checking Pockets


Each pocket of each garment should be checked.

Take out any object remaining in the pocket, to prevent any damage of the garment when it is put into rotating dry-cleaner.

  • Garments that are torn discolored or out of shape should be picked out for guest confirmation see “Guest Laundry Damage” SOP.

Testing


  • Dry-cleaning solvent is used to test if the garment is fit for dry-cleaning.  

  • Drop a little dry cleaning solvent on the garment (usually on the hem, inside of pocket or someplace it isn’t easily noticed), to see if the clothing is color fast or not. 

  •  If any color reaction happens, give up the idea of dry-cleaning & consider for washing. 

  • Use dry-cleaning solvent to test buttons, decorating ornaments, if any color reaction happens, take them out before dry-cleaning & re-sew onto the garment after dry-cleaning.

Spot-Clean



  • Since many kinds of stain are not easily removed during dry-cleaning, it should be spot cleaned before or after dry- cleaning process.  

  • Please refer to “Spot Cleaning” SOP.

Guideline

  • The guideline for dry cleaning is as follows:

  • All light colored items are dry cleaned together whilst dark colors are processed separately.

  • Also priority is given to dry clean all guest laundry, before processing uniforms.

  • Ensure that even if dry cleaning load is heavy, that we do not over-load the machine.

  • Dry cleaning machines cannot be overloaded  for 2 reasons: 

Because the dry cleaning result will not be as clean.

  • Because the machine door cannot be shut tightly. This will result in machine damage.
